Letter: Research can be done without alive animals

It is extremely distressing to learn that the University of Iowa continues to use live animals for research. Obviously, the goat that escaped was not happy in that environment and was desperate to escape. With all of the new information available showing ways to study without using live animals, I find the university sadly lacking.
The Federal Animal Welfare Act was signed into law in 1966. Since then the National Institutes of Health has provided resources to facilitate biomedical research using animal models, not live animals. I hope the University of Iowa will reconsider its use of live animals at their Research Park. I also hope the goat will find a much better home.
