Letter: Rep. Blum displayed character during flood

Though few people saw this as we were bracing for the recent flood, our Congressman, Rod Blum, was among the many volunteers at Mid-American sandbagging before the river crested.
At a time when most Americans are frustrated and disillusioned with politics and politicians, it was great to see that - without any TV cameras around - Blum was in the trenches with us shoveling sand.
I've heard he's pushing legislation to help Cedar Rapids finally get the flood protection we need, and I hope he succeeds. In the meantime, it's great to know that in addition to legislation, he was physically there helping.
They say your character is what you do when no one is looking and, politics aside, Blum showed a lot that day. I think that no matter what political party you are in and whether you are voting for him or not, we should all respect this a great deal.
