Letter: Reader wants compelling news

Junk food expands our waistlines, but junk TV news shrinks our brains. What is junk TV news? Basically, it is trivial information. Over the years, I have seen the following reports on area TV channels: bird droppings in Greene Square, emotional therapy for dogs, a three-legged dog, bedbugs invading hotels, a cat stranded in a tree and the Pokemon Go craze. And this is just the short list.
With junk news, along with commercials and community spots, not much time remains in a 30 minute news cast for important news. Junk TV news is crowding out what's vital for viewers to know. You would think that with all the fancy equipment and technology, high paid anchors and millions of advertising dollars, that the end product - the news - would be overwhelmingly significant. It's not. Stop shrinking our brains.
