Letter: Reader disappointed in many Iowans

As a young child, when I didn't get my way, I learned very quickly I would never get what I wanted by yelling, screaming or throwing a tantrum. I am fortunate to have been taught the value of acting respectful toward all, regardless of their opinions and beliefs.

Apparently this was lost on those who attended U.S. Rep. Rod Blum's town hall meetings. Yelling, screaming and being inconsiderate apparently were displayed by many of those in attendance at these events; an embarrassment to many Iowans. My assumption is those who yelled the loudest didn't vote for Blum so regardless of what he said he would have been met with the same result. It made for good TV on the news channels though, right?

We all have the right to disagree with our elected officials. We have a right and obligation to hold them accountable. We need to voice our concerns to them, constructively. I, for one, am skeptical of all our elected officials. However, yelling, screaming and being disrespectful only demeans these gatherings and shows what many of us were taught as children has been forgotten into adulthood and is a poor example to our younger generation should behave when they disagree with someone.

Iowans are better than what was displayed in the media and those who were disruptive should be ashamed of themselves; there is no value in your actions other than to show you acted like a spoiled child who didn't get their way back in November.
