Letter: New gun regulations are perplexing

I am trying to make sense of the United States and the state of Iowa. I love this country so I am gravely concerned.
Right now, our country wants to give those with a diagnosed mental health disorder access to weapons without proper training. (In the military, I went through eight weeks of training before I was qualified with the M-16).
Next, you have stand your ground legislation. Follow the path and you find our legislators are giving the mentally ill weapons, and in the same sweeping action, legislators deny these patients funding for proper mental health coverage and treatment. What could possibly go wrong?
I urge all to follow what is going on in Washington, D.C. and Des Moines, become involved and vote in the 2018 elections.
