Letter: Necessities before luxuries

My parents and grandparents lived through the Great Depression. They passed down many lessons to their children. I would like to share one of those lessons with our city leaders on how to spend money wisely: 'Always purchase necessities before luxuries.”
So could we not even mention the word casino until our flood protection is secured? And please, stop blaming the federal government for this. A convention center and hotel, Greene Square art, and sidewalks that residents don't even want are all luxuries, not necessities.
