Letter: Monica Vernon is a political opportunist

I find myself wondering what Monica Vernon actually thinks about the issues. She is running as a Democrat, but was a stalwart Republican as recently as 2009. She attended her first Democratic presidential caucus this year. She made substantial donations to Republican politicians not so long ago.

This is interesting behavior for a resolute Democrat, and Vernon has failed to address the issue in depth. Has she truly undergone a political transformation in the interim or did she recognize that there are more registered Democrats than Republicans in our district?

We need an independent voice for Iowa, not a political opportunist who will do, say or join anything in pursuit of personal ambition.

Rod Blum has shown remarkable spine in bucking the Republican establishment and working across the aisle; can we expect the same integrity from Vernon?
