Letter: Marion property tax rate forcing move

Two years ago my wife and I moved back to the area after a 42 year hiatus; to live out our golden years in the home of our dreams on the north end of Marion. Now, the receipt of our initial Linn County property tax bill has left us with no choice but to vacate our dream home and relocate to Waterloo.
What galls us the most is the fat-cat Linn-Mar School District's chunk of our property tax bill amounts to a staggering 44 percent of the total bill. And almost as if on cue, we received a flyer in the mail earlier this week urging us to vote yes for even more property tax funding during the upcoming Sept. 12 school election.
It is sad the Linn-Mar School District's limitless budget has succeeded in driving yet another elderly couple on a fixed income out of the area. The moniker 'Ankeny East” is very well deserved indeed.
