Letter: Local golf courses should cut prices

Gordon Taylor's letter ('Raise golf rates to generate more money,” April 30) is off base about raising golf fees $5 a round to raise $500,000 from the 100,000 rounds being played per year.
First, many of the golfers are retired and on fixed incomes. They will not play as many rounds or will go to other less expensive courses to play. Cedar Rapids courses are overpriced.
They need to cut their prices to allow more rounds to be played, especially for retirees and the youth. If they added 20,000 more rounds at $30 a round, they could increase revenue $600,000. I know of ex-golfers who have quit playing because of the higher fees.
The correlation between school funding and golf do not apply. Schools are state funded. Golf courses are city funded.
