Letter: Legislature must commit to funding education

I was struck by Regent Bruce Rastetter's quote about 'whether (Iowa) can afford all the education it has” ('Regents seek an alternative approach to higher ed funding,” April 29).
When it comes to education, the question can't be if we can afford it - it must be are we going to commit to funding education as the priority we claim it to be?
Iowa's GOP-led government keeps handing out tax credits and tax breaks like candy, throws even more money at the nonexistent problem of voter fraud, and Republicans have said a big income tax cut is on the table for next year. When it comes to budgeting for education (as well as other essential state services), it's shameful to see these same Republicans simply shrug and say, 'There's no money for that.”
