Letter: Issue stamp to observe Gold Star families

My father was badly injured by the shrapnel that killed his best friend in a World War II foxhole. Some years later, Dad shared his enjoyment of stamp collecting with me when I was young. One of the stamps I found was a 1948 commemorative three cent stamp displaying 'Gold Star Mothers” on it. He explained the solemn meaning of that special stamp. Stamp collecting was a highly educational activity which provided me with new knowledge about history, geography, and world events.
In view of comments by Mr. and Mrs. Khan about the loss of their son in Iraq and the many comments following their recent appearance at the Democratic National Convention, it is the perfect to time to once again honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for this wonderful country. Despite thoughtless comments by some who have never been touched by the horrors of war, most people sympathize with such sacrifice. I would love to see a new Gold Star Family stamp issued to teach all of us once again what Gold Star means and to see it on our mail.
