Letter: Impossible to separate church from state

Many people keep calling for separation of church and state, but that would require separating belief in God from every individual in government. All people look toward someone as the ultimate authority on how life should be lived. Many Christians, Muslims, Hindu and other worldwide religions call that authority 'god”, but even an atheist follows an ultimate authority.

Everyone has an ultimate authority they trust to guide them in life's decisions, to comfort them in dark times and to help solve the mysteries of life. That ultimate authority to many people is themselves, or some other person such as parents or the government. Everyone has a god in their life even if it is themselves. Humanism is a religion that puts man as the ultimate authority of life.

No government can exist without people who are guided by discernment of right and wrong. That discernment comes from each person's ultimate authority; their 'god.” An atheist cannot separate the foundation of their morality from themselves, any more than a Christian can separate their belief in God from themselves.
