Letter: Implement automatic voter registration

The voter ID bill being debated in the Legislature purports to eliminate voter fraud and to update the voting process. It does neither. There is a better plan - automatic voter registration.
Automatic voter registration is a new system that modernizes voter registration and prevents fraud. Unless a voter requests otherwise, he/she is automatically registered when they interact with a government official such as upon registering a car or getting/renewing a driver's' license. The voter's information will automatically be recorded and electronically sent to election officials. Automatic voter registration cleans up the rolls and prevents a person from being registered to vote in more than one state. Six states and the District of Columbia have approved this system. Several other states are looking at bills to implement it.
Instead of building barriers to voting in Iowa, let's choose the best voting system. Implement automatic voter registration to ensure clean elections.
