Letter: Grassley needs support of Iowans

One of our nation's most experienced senators, Chuck Grassley, needs the prayers and support of Iowans.
He has fought for economic stability locally and nationally. He has stood up for farmers, families and freedom. Now, as the chairman for the Judiciary Committee, Grassley is risking his legacy for the sake of America.
In 2005, Grassley called for a simple 'up/down” vote on presidential nominees. Now, he stands ready to keep President Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee waiting in the wings. Why the change? Clearly, the answer lies in the behavior of recent justices.
Four decades ago we could trust the highest court to interpret law, not make laws. Now, with a volatile and divided political scene, judges have ignored precedent to appease culture. Grassley wisely waits for a president who will select a tempered justice willing to weigh laws based on established law. Particularly, we need a judge who has a persistent record in upholding the 1st Amendment (guarding the value of life and religious liberties). Likewise, many seek a judge who honors God and Holy Scripture - practices that shaped our country since inception and continue across all states. Clearly, not all Americans share these sentiments. They look at history with chronological snobbery, thinking modern culture is an evolutionary step forward. At a bare minimum, it is worth waiting until the presidential election to see which views on judicial restraint (or its freewheeling counterpart), life, and liberty should shape the next nominee.
