Letter: Get involved in the political process

What in the world is happening to our country? Is the government broken? Are these the best candidates our two parties have to offer? Does it make any difference?
The Greek statesman and orator Pericles issued this warning 2500 years ago to the citizens of Athens: 'Just because you don't take an interest in politics doesn't mean that politics won't take an interest in you.”
More recently, syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer, in his book 'Things That Matter” wrote: 'If we don't get politics right, everything else risks extinction. Politics - in all its grubby, grasping, corrupt, contemptible manifestations - is sovereign in human affairs. Everything ultimately rests upon it.”
But how often have you heard people say they make a point of not discussing politics?
Listen to this too-typical man-on-the-street-answer to the 'question of the day” concerning the upcoming election: (reporter) 'Which is worse, sir? Ignorance or apathy?” (voter) 'I guess I really don't know … and frankly, I don't care!”
If people won't talk politics, pay attention and get involved, chances are they won't know and they won't care - until it's too late. We may be getting there.
Pogo said it best: 'We have met the enemy and it is us!”
