Letter: Explore reasons for declining attendance

Rather than trying to suppress the open exchange of ideas in The Gazette, perhaps Christians should look within themselves to determine possible reasons for declining attendance. One major reason might be the 'sky is falling” response to marriage equality among some Christian leaders, along with the marginalization of women, the LGBTQ community, minority religions and non-believers. Our current political climate pitting civil rights against religious beliefs may also be playing a part in the declining numbers, especially in younger generations.

Perhaps churchgoers are simply finding it more rewarding to work on community service projects rather than spending time in church. Whatever the reason, I doubt that articles about atheism would have much effect on individual decisions. If anything, such articles will help non-believers realize they are not alone and encourage them to speak up.

As more and more people begin to question their faith, open forums and open minds are essential to discuss our common humanity, and to help remove the long-standing stigma associated with atheism.
