Letter: Everyone can be politically involved

As a sociology student at Cornell College and intern at the Catherine McAuley Center (CMC) during a season in which voting is a popular subject, I have observed that the center is working to empower clients to take action in the political process regardless of their ability to vote - something we all should do.
However, homelessness, poverty and felony conviction are barriers to political involvement for many. Education about the political process can help individuals navigate challenges like finding the correct polling place after changes in addresses - a common problem for people experiencing poverty - and getting full voting rights restored.
CMC's Transitional Housing Program (THP) provides women with a safe place to live along with guidance and education to help them stabilize their lives. With the election approaching, THP staff are working to provide all residents (many of whom experience the barriers mentioned above) with opportunities to learn about and engage in the political process. Since January, THP residents have spoken to local Democratic and Republican representatives, attended voter forums, registered to vote and learned about polling locations. Opportunities to speak to candidates gives those who do not have voting rights the chance to have their voices heard.
I hope that CMC's residents' involvement inspires others to take action on issues they care about and have the ability to change. I challenge those of us who have our voting rights to use them on Tuesday.
To those who cannot vote, please continue to advocate for what you believe in.
