Letter: Energy independence is vital to economy

I was pleased to see U.S. Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz address the importance of energy independence during his tour through Iowa. Secretary Moniz discussed how crucial energy self-sufficiency is to our economy and geopolitical relations around the world.
Although Secretary Moniz focused on our growing renewable energy sector, I would assert from a national security standpoint, a comprehensive energy strategy is best suited to enhance our nation's energy security.
Our economy continues, and will continue to source large amounts of our energy from crude oil and natural gas. The U.S. Energy Information Administration forecast demand for oil will increase in 2016 and 2017.
It becomes incumbent on our next administration to continue investments in a strong domestic energy sector. Key policy decisions, such as lifting the archaic ban on crude oil last year, provide us strategic advantages and independence over energy exporting nations like Russia, Venezuela and Iran.
When the U.S. can be in charge of our own energy future, while simultaneously increasing our market share and supplying our allies' energy needs, we will have a winning strategy and maintain our worldwide position of leadership. Couple that with strong job growth across the oil, cleaner burning natural gas and renewable energy sectors, our future economic and national security picture is bright as we lead the way for others to follow.
