Letter: Control our borders, protect workers

Regarding the Non-Sequitur cartoon published April 17:
This cartoon addresses the wall that Donald Trump wants to build on our Mexican border. In a perfect world this would not be needed; however, we need to look at Germany as potential problem for us as well.
I worked for the state for many years processing cash, food and medical assistance for children and families. We could not give undocumented immigrant adults benefits, but any children were able to receive aid based on their parents' income. A neighbor next door to my son had his house roofed by a Mexican crew for a much lower cost than any local company because they pay no taxes or fees. This takes money away from U.S. citizens and although they did a good job, the playing field needs to be level so legal workers - white, black, Mexican or any other ethnic group - have the same chance to work. All countries need borders and if we cannot have enough border workers then we need some other form of control. We also need to know who is in our country no matter where they are from. This includes Canada, Europe and the Middle East as well. There is too much uncertainty for us not to have control over who lives here and screen everyone the same.
