Letter: Consider expense, use of sidewalks

Living on Random Road, my husband and I are not directly involved with the plans for sidewalks on 34th Street SE and Cottage Grove Avenue SE, but we use the streets every time we leave our home. It is very rare to see anyone walking or jogging on 34th Street and I don't think I have ever seen a bike on it. I have never heard anyone wish there were sidewalks. We have sidewalks on Random Road, but people walking or jogging appear to prefer the street.
The initial expense of the sidewalk to the homeowner and to the city, the care of them year-round, and the constant concern about lawsuits must be considered.
Sidewalks are an expense for the homeowner as well as for the city, and if the 'Sidewalk to Nowhere” is not needed or wanted, it is wasted money that could be used for the much-needed resurfacing of streets.
Rebuilding a new bridge is necessary, but leave 34th Street SE as it is. The residents of this area are the best judges of the sidewalk project.
