Letter: Committee slow to announce judicial nominations

Sen. Chuck Grassley is chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee. This group has been unusually slow to send along judicial nominations to the Senate for confirmation. This is despite more than 30 emergency vacancies in federal courts. A close look shows that judges in most states with Republican Senators get on a fast track to confirmation. But those in states with Democratic Senators take twice as long (uscourts.gov).
With Grassley leading, this committee treats certain states as second-class when it comes to the right to 'swift course of justice” - impossible when the courts are backlogged and understaffed. So it is no surprise that Sen. Grassley thinks nothing of a potential yearlong vacancy in the U.S. Supreme
Court.
Iowans who believe in 'justice for all” will think twice about who they next elect for the U.S. Senate.
