Lynda Waddington raises an interesting point in her column ('Reasonable to require gun handling,” March 5). She wrote that 'People authorized to carry a weapon into the local library or grocery store should have basic knowledge of what's resting near their armpit or in their handbag.” My initial response was that the Constitution makes it a right to own firearms in our country.
But on further reflection, I think Waddington is on to something. I propose that we go a step further. Before people are authorized to vote, I recommend that potential voters first be required to demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of how our government works.
Basic knowledge of handling and operating a gun before carrying? Not a bad idea. Basic knowledge of civics and the operation of our government before going into the voting booth? Not a bad idea, either.
