Letter: Casino motives must be scrutinized

What you see is what you get is not always true especially in casinos. It would appear that it would be the right thing to do for Cedar Rapids to get a casino because it would be profitable and it's popular. But you never see any articles about how many people struggle with their addiction to gambling and resort to robbery. And how many families are destroyed. When you hear about a gambling winner, you never hear how much they spent before their winning. Gambling is based on greed.

Cedar Rapids' underlying motive for getting a casino is money. There's nothing new about that. But when money enters the equation, principles go out the window. It may be profitable and popular, but is it right? Motives must always be scrutinized. Better to be poor and right than wrong and rich.
