Letter: Bring Hawkeye story to the big screen

As both of my friends spent spring break somewhere other than Cedar Rapids, I was left alone trying to make rent working two jobs. Distracted by March Madness? Not really. Without my beloved Hawkeyes dancing my interest level was rather low. My thoughts were distracted by an idea. With two of the Big Ten's top basketball programs approaching their bids, albeit the NIT, very differently. Indiana, apparently disappointed with an NCAA snub, refused to host a first round game. Spring break, tarnishing their image, not sure. Iowa, on the other hand? Number one seed. Pack Carver-Hawkeye for at least one more night and give a youth-laden roster postseason experience? Why not?
The results. First round loss. Fired head coach. Rumors stirring about a replacement who is having huge success out west. First round win. Twelve thousand plus hungry fans. Another home opportunity to showcase an incredibly talented young line up.
My idea? Film remake. Fast forward to the Oscars. And the winner for Best Picture goes to (you guessed it) Ashton Kutcher for 'Hawkeyes.” The year 1986 gave us one of the best, most inspirational sports movies of all time. The Oscar snubbed 'Hoosiers.” Imagine the all-star cast: Tom Arnold, Dan Gable, Elijah Wood, Ron Livingston. Best Picture in ‘86 went to 'Platoon” and though Gene Hackman got an Oscar nomination as did the movie, both missed out on taking home a gold statue. Give me a call when you have a chance, Mr. Kutcher.
