Letter: Bicyclists should follow road rules

Cedar Rapids has done a lot for bicyclists and I watch out for them when driving. However, it concerns me that quite a few bicyclists have no respect for the road.
As a case in point, while going to work recently on Second Street SE, I was behind five bicyclists who were decked out in safety gear. Two of the cyclists were riding on the white line of the bicycle lane making it difficult for motor vehicles. As they approached Fourth Avenue SE they made a right turn onto Fourth Avenue and not one of them signaled their turn, nor did they stop for the stop sign.
I see this all the time, where bicyclists don't believe the rules apply to them. They ride on sidewalks when there is a bike lane and even ride the wrong way in a bike lane. I have heard respect is earned, bicyclist should try earning it by following the rules of the road. It also may be time for city police to start enforcing the rules as the do for cars. A few hefty moving violations may change things.
