Laverty values education

The Cedar Rapids School District has faced unprecedented challenges in the last few years. The historic flood of 2008 destroyed or rendered unusable a number of district buildings, including Taylor Elementary which was quickly reopened to help restore the surrounding neighborhood.
Enrollment has declined and the number of low-income students also has increased; 45 percent are on free or reduced lunches at school. The Iowa Legislature mid year cut school funding by 10 percent in 2010 and gave 0 percent allowable growth this year. Although the district has used a portion of its cash reserves to cover such unforeseen expenses, wise management of precious financial resources has allowed the district to maintain a AAA bond rating, considered an indicator of excellent financial health in a public entity. The district's property tax rate is second lowest among its larger peer districts in Iowa.
Responsible leadership does not happen by accident. A competent school board is assembled when citizens vote wisely for their elected leaders.
We have known John Laverty and his wife, Anne, for many years. They value education - John has an M.A. in higher education administration and has worked in the UI's Office of Admissions for more than 20 years. They have two wonderful children in Cedar Rapids schools and are active as parent volunteers.
We encourage you to vote for Laverty on Tuesday.
