Lack of transportation a barrier

To the editor:
As a social worker who has worked in a variety of disciplines, I have found that there is one consistent barrier to services. That barrier is transportation.
Whether it be transportation to work, for child care or for health care, it is clear that there is a need for access to transportation. Public transit that is available is lacking and rural transit is almost unheard of.
Our infrastructure is built in a way that promotes private vehicles, but this is problematic for a number of reasons. Owning and maintaining a private vehicle is expensive. Those with lower and fixed incomes can easily find themselves spending up to half their income on gas, insurance, maintenance and repairs.
For those unable to drive due to medical reasons, lack of transportation prevents their full participation in society. As our population ages, I predict that we will see an increase in the number of people in need of transit options in order to maintain their independence. I urge and encourage you to contact your legislator to advocate for increased funding for public and regional transit. This will not only provide access to needed services, but also increase connectivity across our state.
