Lack of honor for fallen soldiers sad
The Gazette Opinion Staff
May. 11, 2011 10:43 am
Recently, we lost soldiers from our state who fought beside my son in Afghanistan. Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad asked us last week to lower our flags in regards to the sacrifice these heroes and their families made.
As the mother of a soldier fighting in Afghanistan, and a lifetime resident of Anamosa, I was appalled over the lack of honor these men were shown from this town, and several surrounding communities.
While some businesses raised their flags back up too early, others disregarded these soldiers entirely by neglecting to lower their flags to half mast at all.
There has been an overwhelming show of support to our family from the residents of this community but, I'm ashamed by the lack of respect shown by surrounding businesses and community buildings.
Though the thought of losing another life is horrendous, I hope that in the future, this community will show the respect deserved to all fallen soldiers.
Proud to be a soldier's mother.
