As Carletta Knox-Seymour's campaign manager, I see her great capacity as an innovative leader. During her campaign, I've come to know her as a tenacious and truth-seeking individual. She's a visionary, a compassionate listener, an inspiration for youth and a true role model. She's demonstrated this by being the first African-American woman in Cedar Rapids to pioneer her home-baked goods as a local wholesaler, and she is a second-term city planning commissioner.
On the campaign trail, I have met many individuals, but what stands out most for me are the men who knew her late father, John Knox. He was a boxing coach for young boys at the Jane Boyd Community House. He taught them discipline and gave them direction. He was like a surrogate father to them. At the mere mention of his name, it appears that these men instantly return to their youth and remember how he inspired them.
I see in Knox-Seymour the same characteristics as her father. Being committed, having a long-term vision, willing to work through difficulties and having the ability to work with a diverse group of people throughout the city.
It is my belief that she will serve this city well by respecting others' views, developing new ideas and making tough decisions. I ask you to elect her to City Council at-large Tuesday.
