Kids in need would love to do good deeds

The Oct. 30 front-page article (“Kids in need”) on the wonderful people who send food to hungry children and families in Cedar Rapids is heartwarming. Yet it leaves me feeling something is needed. We don't want any child to go hungry, but the children need to feel worthy of these gifts.
Children love to help and feel good about themselves, and we could suggest ways they could be of service to the community: walk the neighbor's dog, sweep the sidewalks, sit with an aged neighbor - so many things.
Their souls and bodies would both be fed. Maybe they could report back to their schools the good deeds they had done. It feels so good to give back.
