Kernels peanut suspension a huge foul
The Gazette Opinion Staff

The Cedar Rapids Kernels learned a cold, hard lesson on opening night (April 8): You don't mess with the gods of baseball. Although there are many causes and conditions of which the world should be more aware, suspending sales of peanuts one night at the ballpark to heighten arachis hypogeal (nut intolerance) consciousness flies in the face of all that is sacred.
Thundering bats were silenced; scoring opportunities were muffed as the gods of baseball sent a clear and unmistakable message to Kernels management regarding the fans' favorite legume. And I hope the message was received.
Dietary sensitivity has its place. But not in Abner Doubleday's (one of America's greatest peanut vendors) arena. For where can it all lead? Are hot dogs next?
No. The boys of summer should not have to pay the price for bad decisions in the front office. Let's hope that the brilliant and dedicated career of Jack Roeder receives no more black marks from the celestial board of governors as it winds down.
What of the poor lactose intolerant? There was no shortage of cheeseburgers or ice cream cups Thursday night! Should we give any less consideration to their plight? I think not!
Food for thought from the saints of the white sphere as channeled through one old baseball fan. See ya at the ballpark.
