Keeping Polk open is a community effort
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Mar. 9, 2012 11:43 pm
In the beginning, support for Polk Elementary School and its staff was rallied by a few loyal parents. But the movement has grown into a communitywide effort to save a thriving, shining star in what some consider a less than shiny neighborhood.
There are more than 1,500 signatures on a petition, including some City Council members. There are 300 signs dotting the landscape of Cedar Rapids. There have been editorials and guest columnists writing about Polk for months.
The fact that Dr. Dave Benson still recommended the school for closure shows his complete disrespect for the thoughts of the majority, but the school board would be wise in remembering that you are elected. You do not have the luxury of casting aside your constituents, unless you are ready to have us show you the door.
