Keep social perceptions in mind

To the editor:
Regarding the young men in Vinton who display the Confederate flag on their pickup trucks under the pretense of freedom of speech and not racism, unfortunately for them, social perceptions define the meaning, and society sees it as racist.
Case in point, the swastika was adopted by Nazi Germany as their symbol, yet it was one used by the Native American Indians for centuries before. I'm certainly not going to display one on my truck to honor the heritage of the Indians, because no one would see it as that.
