Kaufmann comment contradicts recent legislation
Apr. 24, 2023 6:00 am
In a recent article in The Gazette (“Raw Milk sales bill headed to Reynolds,” April 19), Rep. Bobby Kaufmann said people who have concerns about the safety of raw milk can “simply avoid consuming it.” Perhaps Republicans should adopt this same advice regarding some of their other legislation.
Don’t like drag story time? Don’t take your kids there. Simply avoid it, but let others enjoy. Don’t want your child to read certain books? Be aware of what books your child is reading and disallow the ones you object to. But don’t ban books from everyone. Don’t want your kids to learn the real history of Black Americans? Homeschool them. Want to send your kids to a private religious school? Fine. Do it. But not on my dime. Think abortion is wrong? Don’t get one.
As Kaufmann said, people shouldn’t have the government “sitting on their shoulder, and whispering what’s best for their families.” Since when do Iowa Republicans whisper anything? Their small-minded, bigoted legislation is a deafening roar.
