Judges’ ouster sullies our progressive history
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Dec. 20, 2010 3:30 pm
When the Supreme Court overturned the same-sex marriage ban in 2009, I believed Iowa was continuing with its progressive history. We allowed a minority to oust three qualified Supreme Court judges because they did not agree with their ruling upholding the equal protection clause in our state constitution and accused all seven of judicial activism.
Now they are going after the remaining four. Just because someone is born gay does not mean he or she should not be awarded the same rights that straight people seem to deserve. The judges rightfully took the high ground by not campaigning to keep their positions on the court.
Now our governor-elect is capitulating to this group and wants to revisit legislation that would abolish same-sex marriage. Mr. Branstad and Mr. Vander Plaats, you should be ashamed of yourselves. You do not have the right to disregard the constitutionality of a poorly written law.
At this point, I am ashamed to be from the “Former Progressive State of Iowa.”
