Jesus taught personal responsibility
The Gazette Opinion Staff

President Barack Obama declared to the world that we are not a Christian nation. Why did a well known Democratic politician make national news by saying “What would Jesus do?” This is an attempt to allow politicians to claim that they are doing God's work by passing a bill they want by using a specific quote from the Bible.
One quote from Jesus: “We will always have the poor with us.” Could you imagine the result if a Republican used this quote in the budget debate? They would probably try to crucify him.
The facts are that Jesus taught personal responsibility in all things spiritual and physical. If we practice this in our personal lives, and transfer the ideas up to the government level, we would have a good government.
Jesus did not say it is the responsibility of the government to tax others, to spread the wealth or misery. When Israel wanted a king like all the other nations, it was God through the prophet Samuel who told the people the king or government will overtax and enslave you and your children.
Maybe the politicians should do what Jesus did. Go to the desert, fast for 40 days and pray for guidance.
