Iowa's waterways must be allowed to flow free

I appreciated Peter Komendowski's well thought-out column (“No lake in Delhi; let river flow,” March 12). He spelled out the reasons why the Maquoketa River should again be allowed to flow free. Ever since the dam failed, many have felt the way Komendowksi does - Iowa's wonderful network of waterways and fertile lands must be protected and allowed to flow free.
Iowa is blessed to have many natural lakes, ponds, water sources and patches, already providing value to nature-lovers and fishermen without spending state taxpayer money year after year for the continued enjoyment of the few.
There has to be better, more worthwhile projects for these dollars profiting the larger part of the state's taxpaying population. Our hope is that those with their fingers controlling that taxpayers' till think long and hard and fairly on this one.
