Iowans benefit from pharmacy-provided vaccines

We congratulate state legislators for passing a bill that will make it possible for more children and adults to be vaccinated at their neighborhood pharmacies.
The legislation, recently signed by Gov. Terry Branstad, allows pharmacists to administer seasonal flu vaccines to anyone age 6 and older and CDC-recommended vaccines to anyone 18 or older without a prescription. Iowans will benefit from this expansion of pharmacy-provided vaccines. States that allow pharmacists to administer seasonal flu vaccine have seen vaccination rates go up between 5 and 10 percent. Nearly 20 percent of Americans now get their flu vaccine at a local pharmacy.
Pharmacists are trained, trusted health professionals. They are easily accessible to urban and rural residents. Now, more Iowans, especially those living in underserved areas, can be reached with vaccines.
It is encouraging that both physician and pharmacy groups recognized the need to expand immunization access and worked together on a legislative solution. That type of cooperation is essential for continued progress on community health issues.
