Iowans are fortunate to have Tom Miller as our attorney general. He has been fighting for years on behalf of adults and youth to reduce the health care and financial burden of tobacco use. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death and disability in the United States.
In Iowa, annual health care costs directly caused by smoking are $1.28 billion. Smoking also affects quality of life and productivity. In 1998 Tom Miller was a national leader in the multistate lawsuit and settlement agreement with the tobacco industry. Since 1999 Iowa has received $1.41 billion in payments including a payment of over $53 million this year. Every year Tom Miller continues to ensure the full appropriate payment is made as tobacco companies withhold part of the payments. A portion of the annual settlement money is invested in programs to encourage youth to avoid the use of tobacco and to assist current smokers in quitting.
This is just one example of how Tom Miller has delivered results for Iowans. Now he is taking on the rural opioid epidemic in Iowa. We need someone who fights for Iowans, not partisan politics. We need Tom Miller as our attorney general.
