Iowa GOP platform misinterpreted
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Nov. 27, 2010 3:44 pm
In Peter Bungum's Nov. 19 letter, he expressed views on the Iowa Republican Platform and then proceeded to list examples. I am writing this letter to correct a few of the items listed:
4.04 - Oppose preschool education in Iowa.
According to the Iowa Republican website, 4.04 states exactly the following: We oppose a federal or state-run preschool system and compulsory preschool, and any proposal to lower the age at which children are required to attend school.
There is a pretty big difference between your interpretation, and the truly stated plank. Another example:
4.36 - Use Bible as a textbook.
According to the GOP website, 4.36 actually states, “We call for the repeal of the nationalization of the student-loan industry.”
I believe you may be referring to 4.32 which states,“We believe that voluntary teacher- or student-led prayer shall not be restricted in public schools. The use of the Bible as a textbook should be allowed.”
Again, there is a difference between your interpretation and the facts. They are not saying to use the Bible as a textbook but rather that it should be allowed.
The only way for people to form educated opinions and understand the issues is when facts are involved. We have to stop putting our slanted views on everything.
