Iowa DNR protects the river from golf balls

On Feb. 17, I had the privilege of joining around 100 hearty souls in our annual celebration of February golf at the Sutliff Bridge Authority Golf Tourney. Cabin-crazed hackers from several counties renewed friendships and enjoyed cold beverages while competing for fabulous prizes, all in the name of charity.

Little did we know that our litter and pollutants had devastated the mighty Cedar. Never mind the water clarity resembling the color of a Tootsie Roll or the mountains of foam floating by, the results of unencumbered runoff from the millions of acres of farmland in the Cedar River's watershed.

If the Department of Natural Resources wants to flex its muscle and bust up a spring ritual, so be it.

The next time I put my boat in the Iowa or Cedar rivers, which I do religiously, I'd like to peer down into the water and be able to see a few golf balls on the bottom.

But until they seriously start protecting our environment, I guess my grandkids will continue doing their swimming at the city pools. Thanks for nothin'!
