Iowa a good example on same-sex marriage

As an Iowan, I was proud when our state finally approved same-sex marriage. But a mere two years after the Iowa Supreme Court's ruling, we are at risk of revoking this right. While homosexual rights are a hot topic of debate in America, Iowa's forward movement was an important example for other states and a glimmer of hope for the LGBT community.
By attempting to reverse this law, we are taking away a right that all American citizens should have, the freedom to marry whom you love. The basic requirements of marriage in the United States are: consent from both parties, age minimum, the couple is not closely blood related, the couple upholds a short waiting period, the event is officially recorded with at least two witnesses, and some states require HIV testing.
Given that each state has individualized versions of these rules, there is no underlying requirement that members of the betrothed couple must be of different genders. There is nothing illegal about same-sex marriage. And if God is going to damn their souls to hell for it, isn't that their concern? Do America a favor, Iowa, and continue providing an example for the rest of our nation.
