Insults ruined Halloween experience in I.C.

I came to Iowa City on Oct. 30 with my daughter and a friend to attend the midnight showing of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
We had a great time even though we endured quite a few nasty comments from folks who were celebrating Halloween at local bars. I expected a little more tolerance from a community that considers itself so liberal and welcoming.
Having my friend, who was dressed as a French maid (a character from the movie) called a “tranny,” a “cross-dresser,” and the fact our whole group was referred to as “faggots” was quite surprising.
Then we returned to our vehicle and found it had been vandalized by someone who bashed the windshield in with a liquor bottle.
I wish Iowa City luck in addressing these issues.
I will take my money elsewhere and spend it in communities that make me and my family feel welcome. It is time to send a message that these kinds of behaviors will not be tolerated.
