Indian Creek landowners need to retain water
The Gazette Opinion Staff

There is no need to spend 400,000 tax dollars to study Indian Creek. It floods because massive rainfalls have become ever more frequent and because we have allowed construction in the flood plain and hardening of the soil with parking lots and roofs that swiftly channel water into the creek.
The solution is as clear as the problem. Every landowner needs to be responsible for retaining storm water on his or her property, rather than diverting it to storm sewers.
Many techniques, including rain gardens, permeable paving and native vegetation facilitate water infiltration on site. These are in place for public inspection at the Indian Creek Nature Center. They work.
It is time to quit studying the problem and work together to solve it.
