Independence, Marion show sportsmanship
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Feb. 18, 2010 11:04 pm
On Feb. 11, Randy Andrews and I officiated a seventh-grade basketball game between Marion and Independence. Prior to the game, Independence and Marion coaches told us that Marion has a player who is autistic and they would let us know when he would be playing. What we observed that evening was truly great sportsmanship from coaches and players.
Marion schools and the community should be very proud of these young men who have taken responsibility to help this player.
Marion players and coaching staff have helped this young man be a part of a team and school. He may not ever start or play college ball, but to see him score 4 points and both teams clapping for him was a proud moment. Marion players were always helping him on the court and assisting him. These players were having fun; even though he traveled, double dribbled, it did not matter. These kids understand “team.”
Independence coaches are commended to help their kids understand and the Independence school district and community should be proud. Great sportsmanship.
