Income tax system should be based on principles
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Nov. 7, 2011 11:46 am
A revised income tax system should be simple, easy to understand and based on principles rather than on expedience. I propose:
l A flat income tax rate applied on all personal, active earned income from wages. salaries, partnership distributions, fees for service and any other source related directly to the taxpayer's occupation.
Principle: Each working person should pay the same flat tax for the privilege of living in a country that provides him/her with a safe and stable environment to live and work in.
l A graduated income tax rate applied on all personal passive income from interest, dividends, net capital gains, awards, prizes, trust distributions, etc.
Principle: This is the amount of tax to be levied on the basis of ability to pay taxes.
l A flat income tax rate on all corporate and trust net income after dividend and trust distributions.
Principle: The tax on distributions is borne by the recipients, and not on the payer thereof, with an equal flat rate levy for all corporations.
I hope that an independent candidate will run for the presidency with a platform based on acceptable principles.
