IBM, Postal Service expose missed chances
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Sep. 6, 2009 12:26 am
Regarding IBM locating in Dubuque: Was Cedar Rapids ever on their short list? Did Cedar Rapids know of their interest in Eastern Iowa? What was done to try to persuade IBM to locate in Cedar Rapids? They wanted nearby colleges. How about Mount Mercy, Coe, Kirkwood, Cornell, University of Iowa?
Regarding the U.S. Postal Service: Does anyone really think we need home delivery more than about three times per week? How about Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday? We survive without Monday delivery on a number of holidays already. Customers would adjust to the new paradigm in about two weeks. Are postal workers immune from layoffs?
