Humanists thank lawmakers for support

The Humanists of Linn County want to thank Iowa Sen. Rob Hogg for the invitation to give the invocation in the Iowa Senate on April 10. We also want to thank Iowa Representatives Liz Bennett and Art Staed for attending the invocation and their continued support.
This was the first secular invocation delivered in the Iowa Senate by a Humanist. Last year our organization delivered a secular invocation in the iowa House chamber.
Both invocations encouraged the Iowa Legislature to use credible evidence, solid rationale, reason, science-based knowledge and informed discourse as they make decisions that will affect all Iowans.
These guiding principles come from the mission of the Humanists of Linn County. That mission is to create a supportive and vibrant non-theist community in Eastern Iowa through secular education, community and political advocacy, and the promotion of reason, compassion and critical thinking.
Our organization believes strongly in the separation of church and state, and we advocate for it at all levels of government.
We are hopeful that the Iowa Legislature will use proved knowledge, reason, critical thinking and informed discourse as they make decisions.
