How we treat animals reflects our society

I am among those troubled and disturbed by the front page story (March 24) on trapping. Trapping is an extremely cruel and indefensible activity and has no place in a civilized society. It is not a sport, not an acceptable way to boost one's income, and just whose stress does it relieve?
Perhaps The Gazette should run a story describing trapping from the viewpoint of the animals whose lives end in terror and in agony in traps.
We are told to “bless the beasts and let them teach you.” It is time to remember that.
How we treat all sentient beings speaks volumes about us and our values. We can and must do better.
