To Sens. Ernst and Grassley and Rep. Miller-Meeks: You should be appalled at what the Trump administration is planning to do to the Social Security Administration (SSA). Trump’s plans include (1) firing thousands of SSA workers, (2) closing SSA field offices, and (3) requiring some recipients to arrive in person rather than over the phone to complete processes including certain claims. Add to that the podcast comments made by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnik, and the threat of a total shutdown of the SSA from its acting commissioner Leland Dudek.
The Trump administration is attempting to break the SSA and steal the $2.78 trillion in its fund just to give 1% of the population tax breaks. Trump would rather his oligarchy friends benefit rather than the recipients who actually earned the benefits.
Keep in mind the more than 70 million Americans who depend on what they have earned — the retirees, the elderly, the disabled who might have to go hungry, might have to stop taking their medications, might lose their homes all because President Donald Trump is not willing to keep the promises that the government made to them.
When you consider what Trump is planning, keep in mind your constituents. How many of your constituents would be harmed by what Trump is planning? How can you truthfully say you represent Iowans? What is it going to take for you to realize that Trump is out for himself and his donors and not for the American people?
